Community Connecting

‘It is vain to talk of the interest of the community, without understanding what is the interest of the individual’

Community Connecting
Supporting people to make a real and valued contribution within their local community is integral to the way we work.
Community Support Services works with each individual to identify their interests and then to integrate fully into their community.

Our support is designed in a way that enables people to be introduced to and connect with others who share their interests and form positive lasting relationships.

The long term aim for many is that little or no formal support will eventually be required and that people will enjoy a natural support through friendships and connections formed. Those individuals with higher needs would have a support worker to enable them to maintain their participation in community life.

We will support people to

  • Connect with and make real and valued contribution within their local community.
  • Build community capital i.e. develop local communities.
  • Firstly identify each person’s interests and then to support introductions and integration into their community through shared interests.
  • Meet new people and form new friendships.
  • Gain a sense of achievement and feel valued.
  • Access new settings and be part of activities as an alternative to those provided by day centres.
  • Provide enough support to sustain community activities, lessen the need for paid activities and increase opportunities for informal support.
  • Access activities outside of day centre hours including evenings, weekends.

A support worker will

  • Work with each person to identify individual interests, likes and dislikes.
  • Offer support that enables people to try different activities to see what they enjoy the most.
  • Help people to settle in to their activities, make introductions and get to know people.
  • Help with arranging how to get to and from a chosen activity.
  • Offer support until people feel safe, confident and comfortable without them.
