About Grow West

We will increase the amount of food produced each year

The aim is to create opportunities for people with learning disabilities who wish to gain knowledge, experience and accredited qualifications in horticulture. This is with a view to finding paid employment in the open market whist developing a manageable, sustainable area for the production of high quality fruit and vegetables.

Objectives

  • To offer 20 work practice placements per day, 7 days per week to people with learning disabilities with the opportunity to gain an accredited qualification and/or NVQ at the end of three years. This is linked to the Employment Scheme.
  •

  • To make full use of approximately 2½ acres of land by making raised and retained beds of a manageable size. This will increase the amount of food produced each year thereby decreasing the amount of vegetables bought in and the attached food miles.
  •

  • To use the composting area of 8.8 cubic metres to recycle all plant and paper waste produced on site cutting down on landfill and waste collection.
  •

  • To work in partnership with Cumbria County Council, Adult Education and Local Schools to achieve best results for all students.
  •

  • To increase awareness of where food comes from, what it is used for and it’s benefits to health by introducing cooking sessions as part of the weekly timetable.
  •

  • To increase the amount of high quality, locally grown fruit and vegetables, that will be used
    a) In the Veggie Box scheme
    b) To sell on site, Stalls and Farmers Markets
    c) In the production of Preserves
    d) In our café, Café West

  •
